Mexican Primera, Week 7: America Win, Chivas Don’t, Big Matches End In Draws

Chivas Guadalajara are still winless in all competitions. Though San Luis is by no means a walkover, they presented a great opportunity for Chivas to finally record a victory on Saturday night. Coaching against his former club, Ignacio Ambriz made multiple changes, none of which worked as intended. Chivas had 19 shots and six on target, but couldn’t find the goal in a 0-0 draw. Following Estudiantes Tecos’ win on Friday, they are bottom of the table. Things went a bit better for Club America, who defeated Pachuca 1-0 on Sunday night to get themselves back into Liguilla places. It was not a terrific performance from the Super Aguilas , but one stellar strike gave them the victory. In the 57th minute, ‘Chucho’ Cristian Benitiez unloaded on a shot from 25 yards and ripped it past Rodolfo Cota, scoring his fifth goal of the year and giving his team the victory. Both of the Primera’s biggest games of the weekend ended in draws. Cruz Azul stayed undefeated, but fell out of the top eight at the same time with their 1-1 draw against city rivals UNAM Pumas. In a terrific match, Eduardo Herrera scored in the first half for Pumas, taking advantage of some terrible defending by Cruz Azul, but Javier Aquino was able to find an equalizer late. The draw was Cruz Azul’s fifth of the season. Santos Laguna and Monterrey also drew 1-1, with Aaron Galindo and Luis Ernesto Perez scoring the goals.
